Face reading, explained
East Asian face reading (관상 / 面相 / 人相) interprets facial structure, proportions, complexion and lines as signs of temperament and the flow of a life. This page lays out the exact framework Mienlore uses. It describes a tradition; it does not claim scientific fact.
1. Origins
The core text is the Song-dynasty Mayi Xiangfa (麻衣相法), extended by the Ming Liuzhuang Xiangfa and the encyclopedic Shenxiang Quanbian. Korea studied it within the court's astronomy-and-divination office; Japan's 人相学 (Mizuno Nanboku) added the idea that diet and restraint change the face and the fate; Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore call the same system 面相. Europe had its own physiognomy — the Aristotelian Physiognomonica, della Porta (1586), Lavater (1772) — which collapsed in the 19th–20th century after entanglement with phrenology, Lombroso's criminal typing and eugenics.
2. Three zones (三停)
The face is divided vertically: upper (hairline–brows) for early life, intellect and parental support; middle (brows–nose tip) for mid-life, will and social activity; lower (nose tip–chin) for later life, stability and juniors. Equal thirds read as an even life; a longer zone marks a stronger period.
3. Five mountains & four rivers
The five mountains are forehead, nose, both cheekbones and chin — they should match in height; a nose standing alone reads as solitary. The four rivers are ears, eyes, mouth and nostrils: deep and clear is good.
4. Five organs (五官)
| Organ | Feature | Considered good |
|---|---|---|
| Longevity keeper | Brows | Longer than the eyes, orderly, glossy |
| Inspector | Eyes | Clear, dark iris, steady gaze |
| Judge | Nose | Straight from bridge to tip, balanced wings, nostrils hidden |
| Intake officer | Mouth | Full, well-defined, corners slightly up |
| Listener | Ears | Higher than brows, clear rim, thick lobe |
Ears cannot be measured from a frontal photo and are omitted in this version.
5. Twelve palaces (十二宮)
Life (between the brows), wealth (nose), siblings (brows), property (eyelids), children (under-eye), servants (jaw sides), spouse (eye corners), illness (nose bridge), travel (upper temples), career (center forehead), fortune (above brows), parents (upper forehead). Wide, full, lustrous and unmarked is good. Mienlore reads life, wealth, siblings, property, servants, career and spouse palaces from ratios.
6. Age-position map (流年運氣部位)
Tradition assigns every age from 1 to 100 a spot on the face, moving ears → forehead → brows/eyes → nose → mouth → chin. The common simplified map is 15–30 forehead, 31–40 brows & eyes, 41–50 nose, 51–60 philtrum & mouth, 61+ chin. Mienlore uses this five-zone map; enter your age to highlight your current region.
7. Complexion and lines
Bone structure is read as baseline temperament; complexion (brightness, luster) as the current flow. Luster matters more than hue. The three forehead lines, the "fish-tail" lines at the eye corners and the nasolabial "law lines" are read as support from seniors, partnership and professional authority.
Lighting, makeup and expression dominate these cues, so they are shown as reference only. Hue categories are not used.
8. Five-element face types
Wood long and composed (idealist, scholarly); Fire broad forehead, tapered chin (passionate, quick); Earth full and broad (steady, generous); Metal angular and defined (decisive, principled); Water round and soft (adaptable, sociable). Most faces are blends.
9. What science says
Plainly: claims that faces reveal personality, intelligence or destiny are not scientifically supported. A model trained on 31,000 selfies reaches an average correlation of about r = 0.24 with self-reported personality; no significant link between facial shape and measured intelligence has been found. First impressions are fast and widely shared, but they are not accurate indicators of real traits. Mienlore therefore offers face reading as cultural tradition and a tool for self-reflection, and tells you not to use it for medical, legal, financial, hiring or relationship decisions. It never infers ethnicity, religion, politics, sexual orientation, criminality or illness.
10. How Mienlore measures
- 478 facial landmarks are located in your browser and turned into ~30 ratios (zones, eye spacing, brow length, glabella width, nose length and width, mouth width, lip fullness, philtrum, chin, symmetry…).
- Each ratio is compared with the average of your chosen measurement reference group and labeled low / mid / high. The group calibrates measurements only and never enters the text.
- Labels meet the traditional rules and become sentences. Every result ships with its measurement table and confidence levels.
- Neither the photo nor the measurements leave your device.
